About this competition

Back of the Net Twelve yards, one keeper, and nobody to blame. The simplest shot in football and the hardest to take.

How it works: One ticket is one penalty. Tap the goal where you want it and the ball goes there, or swipe up from the ball — the direction picks the side, the length picks the height. The sight carries the score that spot would earn and turns red once you are tight enough to a post or the crossbar to lose it: a corner of the mouth scores most, down the middle least, and over-reaching is worth 200. Prefer the keyboard? The arrow keys walk the sight around the goal and space strikes, and the readout speaks the height, the side and the score before you commit. Your ticket's instant win is revealed by the penalty itself — a winning ticket goes in — and your best score across your tickets is what goes on the leaderboard.

Leaderboard prizes: on top of the main prize, the top five on the leaderboard win site credit based on their final ranking when the competition closes.

  • 1st Place — £50 Site Credit
  • 2nd Place — £25 Site Credit
  • 3rd Place — £15 Site Credit
  • 4th Place — £10 Site Credit
  • 5th Place — £5 Site Credit

Your instant win is allocated to the ticket number before the competition opens and is not affected by how you take the penalty, or by whether it is scored or saved. It is available on a free postal entry on exactly the same terms. Leaderboard prizes are separate, are decided by your highest single-penalty score, and are awarded as site credit when the competition closes; a penalty has to be taken to set a score, so a postal entry enters for the instant win and not for a leaderboard place. Where two or more players share the same score, all tied players receive the prize for that position.

How the winner is decided
Two prizes, decided two different ways. Every ticket carries its own instant win, allocated to the ticket number before the competition opened and revealed the moment your penalty is over — nothing about the kick changes it, and the odds are published with these conditions. Separately, each penalty scores points for where you put the ball and how cleanly you struck it — nothing at all for a shot off target, most for a ball struck sweetly just inside a post — and your best score takes a place on the leaderboard: the score is decided entirely by your own aim and power, the same shot always scores the same, and no random element enters it. The goalkeeper's dive decides whether the ball goes in; it does not affect your score. Highest scores take the leaderboard prizes when entries close; ties share the prize for that position.
